Follow Mia as she navigates a tricky day at school, heads off on a big adventure and finds her own way to share her world. Across each story, Mia begins to understand more about her feelings, her needs, what brings her joy and the things that can sometimes feel hard.

Created by autistic writers and illustrators and inspired by real autistic experiences, I Am a Yellow Ladybug gives autistic children the opportunity to see parts of themselves reflected in a colourful and affirming story. It may also help families, educators and other important adults begin conversations about different ways of experiencing, communicating and moving through the world.

The stories can be read together as one longer journey or enjoyed individually, making it easier to choose the story that feels most relevant on a particular day.

Who is this book for?

I Am a Yellow Ladybug was written with younger primary-aged children in mind, but its stories and messages can be enjoyed by readers of all ages. It may be especially meaningful for autistic children learning more about themselves, families beginning conversations about autism, classrooms exploring different experiences, and adults reconnecting with or healing their own inner ladybug.

About the creators

Created by autistic writers and illustrators, I Am a Yellow Ladybug was written by Katie Koullas, founder of Yellow Ladybugs, developed in collaboration with Natasha Staheli and Chenai Mupotsa-Russell, and illustrated by Chenai. Inspired by the true story of Mia, the original Yellow Ladybug, the book brings together autistic lived experience, storytelling and colourful illustration.
