Lipoedema is a chronic, painful connective tissue disorder that is frequently misunderstood, misdiagnosed and often diagnosed years after symptoms first appear. While there is currently no published research directly linking autism and lipoedema, emerging evidence is exploring possible shared biological pathways, including connective tissue differences, lipid metabolism and autonomic nervous system function. There is also growing recognition that the lived experience of autistic people with lipoedema deserves greater attention.

This resource, developed in collaboration with Associate Professor Josephine Barbaro, explores what we currently know about lipoedema, the emerging research surrounding autism, ADHD and lipoedema, and why awareness and early recognition matter. It also highlights the experiences shared by autistic people living with lipoedema and the additional barriers they may face, including delayed recognition, sensory differences, pain, masking and having their health concerns dismissed.

Inside you will find:

• An overview of lipoedema and its key features
• The current evidence on autism, ADHD and lipoedema
• Emerging biological overlaps and areas of ongoing research
• Community insights and lived experience
• Information to support greater awareness, earlier recognition and informed conversations with healthcare professionals

Whether you are autistic, a family member, health professional or simply wanting to learn more, we hope this resource provides a balanced overview of the current evidence while acknowledging the important role of lived experience.
